Introduction

This website is intended to serve as a source of self-reported public information related to the allotment and dispersal of the visual and performing arts and physical education block grant funds: $500 million in one-time funding for the purchase of visual and performing arts and/or physical education supplies and equipment and professional development; $105 million in ongoing funding for the visual and performing arts; and $40 million for physical education.

The website has been designed with several purposes in mind: to enable schools to identify how the new funding is being utilized to meet the needs of school children in these two content areas; to empower policy makers and interested citizens to follow the impact of this historic investment in standards-based arts and physical education; to capture self-reported data from schools across the state; and to serve as a first step towards building a comprehensive system of accountability that will help assure that this and future visual and performing arts and physical education funding is allotted and spent in the way in which it was intended.

The website is a joint effort of The California Arts Project and The California Physical Education and Health Project and endorsed by the following arts and physical education advocacy organizations California Alliance for Arts Education, the American Heart Association, California Public Health Advocates, California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the California State PTA.

We thank the schools across the state that have shared their information in an effort to improve visual and performing arts and physical education for all of California's students.

Helpful Hints

When you find your school, click on the CDS code on the right to begin the process.

In some cases you may have to do your best estimate on expenditures.

In organizing your data on expenditures to respond to the website prompts it is helpful to sort out expenditures in the 4000s into arts materials and instructional resources, equipment, supplies.

There is a carry forward category for those schools and districts waiting to develop plans or planning for expenditures in the future.
